The Healthy Cinnamon – Cassia or Ceylon

Recently, there have been many articles about which type of cinnamon has more health benefits. There are two main types of cinnamon: Ceylon and cassia. Ceylon is also known as the “real or true” cinnamon, with the scientific name Cinnamomum zeylanicum and C. Verum. Cassia, its close relative, has the scientific names Cinnamomum aromaticaum, Cinnamomum cassia, and Cinnamomum burmannii, depending on its country of origin. Korintje Indonesian cassia (Cinnamomum burmanni), or Padang cassia, is what North America primarily imports.1 These two types of cinnamon are produced from the bark of trees that are grown in Sri Lanka, India, Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Brazil. Although the two types of cinnamon are closely related and share some common features like antimicrobial properties, in terms of inhibiting the growth of fungi and yeast, and regulating blood sugar, they are actually not the same—the Ceylon cinnamon sets the standard for the spice.2
